British Tennis star Andy Murray will be hoping to get a final chance to play with the legendary Roger Federer at the Laver Cup next week. The 41-year-old Swiss announced that he would be retiring from professional tennis and will participate in his final ATP tour at the Laver Cup in London.
Murray along with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will be part of Federer’s European team as part of a celebration of the 20-time Grand Slam winner’s career.
Murray spoke about the opportunity to share the court with Federer for one last time.
“I don’t know how much he [Federer] will be able to play. I haven’t spoken to him about that. Maybe I get the opportunity to share a court with him in doubles or something like that. That would be really special,” said Murray.
The Brit lauded Federer’s longevity and congratulated him on an unbelievable career.
“It’s a sad, sad day for the sport. Unbelievable career, the longevity that he’s had. What he did [at the 2017] Australian Open when he came back from the knee surgery and stuff was incredible. The way he played the game and conducted himself, I think all of the players respected him for that.,” Murray added.
The 35-year-old will be looking to quickly bounce back from Britain’s unexpected exit from the Davis Cup. Murray and co. were front-runners to make it through their group, but defeat at the hands of the USA and the Netherlands ended their hopes of making it to the knockout stages.
Laver Cup 2022 will be held at the O2 Arena in London from September 23 to 25. All eyes will be on the European team led by Federer as the Laver Cup turns into one of the most-anticipated tennis tournaments in recent history.
