Ireland managed to score 65 for three in chase of Bangladesh’s 246 for nine as rain stopped play midway into the 17th over in the first ODI of the three-match series in Chelmsford, England on Tuesday.

The hosts still need 182 runs from 33.3 overs to clinch the contest.

Ireland finished the first 10 overs with two down for 39 runs on the board and lost one more in the 16th over when opener Stephen Doheny chipped it back to Taijul Islam.

Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam removed Ireland opener Paul Stirling early in the fourth over to give the Tigers their first breakthrough after the hosts scored 22.

Stirling, in his natural approach, came out aggressive as he hit two fours and a six for his 10-ball 15 but he struck a short and wide one from Shoriful to backward-point where an able Mehedi Hasan Miraz grasped onto a simple chance.

Pacer Hasan Mahmud then got into the act as he bowled a ripper to get rid of Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirinie for a nine-ball five. Hasan got one off a good length to nip back and find the top of the off-stump to leave Ireland two down for 27 after the first five overs.
