Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon confirmed that Liton Das would lead the team in the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan in the absence of regular captain Shakib Al Hasan on Friday.

Shakib fractured his finger during the Ireland series and was ruled out for six weeks, meaning he will not be available for the Test, scheduled to start in Mirpur from June 14.

There were rumours that Liton, who is the vice-captain of the Tigers Test side, was unwilling to take up captaincy as he wanted to focus on batting.

“Since Shakib is injured, the vice-captain will naturally lead in the absence of the regular skipper. As far as I know, Liton is the vice-captain of the Test side. I haven’t heard anything about the issue,” Papon said on Friday while attending the 10th anniversary programme of the Bangladesh Cricket Supporters Association (BCSA)

Although Liton has never captained Bangladesh in the Test format, the wicketkeeper-batter did take on the role in the white-ball format. Bangladesh won the three-match ODI series against India under Liton last year and he also the Tigers in a T20I game in New Zealand in 2021.
