Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha suggested that Bangladesh currently have one of the best sides in its history and can do something special at the upcoming Asia Cup.
The Asia Cup schedule was officially announced yesterday by the Asian Cricket Council with the tournament set to played from August 31 till September 17 under a hybrid model with four matches in Pakistan and the rest being played in Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh have been pitted against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Group B. The 2023 Edition will feature two groups, with two teams from each group qualifying for the Super Four stage. The top two teams from the Super Four stage will then face off in the final.
“We have started the roadmap for Asia Cup, Bangladesh’s side is among the best in its history. We have the best opportunity to do something that Bangladesh hasn’t done before. Other teams would be preparing just as well. But we want to do things in our control,” Hathurusingha said while talking to broadcasters before the third day’s play in the one-off Test between Bangladesh and Afghanistan at Mirpur.
The Tigers are on course for a big second innings lead at Mirpur today with Najmul Hossain Shanto following up his ton in the first innings with another ton today. Bangladesh’s lead has stretched past 450.
The Test is only on its third day in the one-off Test and Hathurusingha expected Bangladesh to carry on batting.
“If we have our say, we’d like to bat the whole day to see how we go in these conditions and because it’s a one-off Test. So, no target at this stage,” he had said.
The likes of Shanto, Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed and Mehedi Hasan Miraz had debuted during Hathurusingha’s first tenure and the Sri Lankan said that it was satisfying to see such players performing now as it gives him more confidence regarding his own decisions.
“Very satisfying because when you’re thinking of giving someone a debut, you need vision and take a lot of things into consideration. You gain confidence about your judgement and decision-making which I find satisfying,” he concluded.
