Watch: Lionel Messi scores in less than 2 minutes in friendly against Australia, his fastest for Argentina

The spectators were also in for a treat around the 34th minute mark when the talismanic Argentinian took the ball past several defenders with a slight feint and a little bit of outrageous dribbling skills.

Argentina doubled their lead in the second half when Rodrigo De Paul floated in an enticing cross into the box and substitute German Pezzella found space between two defenders to fire home a free header.

Messi had led Argentina to a 2-1 win over the Australians in the Round of 16 at the World Cup last year in Qatar.

Messi, whose two year contract with Paris Saint Germain expired at the end of the 2022/23 football season has signed a new deal with US’ Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

He said that after winning the World Cup, it was his time to go the United States and “live football in another way.”

“After I achieved the World Cup that I was missing, I am satisfied and grateful for the career I have made, and this is what is most important to me,” Messi was quoted on a recent media interaction by Albiceleste Talk on Twitter. “As I said earlier, I don’t think I will participate in the next World Cup. I haven’t changed my mind about that. I’d like to be there to watch it, but I’m not going to participate.”

Despite heavy links on his return to Barcelona this season, Messi will not be joining the catalan club after he was forced to leave in 2021 owing to the financial troubles that have taken over at the Nou Camp over the past few years.

“Even though I wasn’t there, they were chanting my name… It was a little strange, but it made great sense. I spent many years there, and so did my kids. I have a deep relationship with Barcelona,” Messi said.
