Former World No. 1 Andy Murray conceded that it might not be easy for him to return to Great Britain’s Davis Cup squad, saying he is aware that competition for the sports in the team is going to get only tougher. Andy Murray defeated Dmitry Popko in straight sets in Great Britain’s 2-1 win over Kazakhstan in an inconsequential Qualifying Group D match on September 18. Notably, Murray did not feature in Great Britain’s defeats to the USA and the Netherlands.

It was not the ideal campaign for Murray, who had led Great Britain to their first Davis Cup crown in 79 years in 2015. The 3-time Grand Slam champion has been struggling for consistency and form after having undergone two hip surgeries.

The World No. 43 was not the first-choice singles player as Great Britain fielded Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans against the USA and the Netherlands.

“I only thought about it at about 5-2 today, to be honest, in the second set,” Murray said after clinching a win in front of his home fans in Glasgow.

“I wasn’t thinking about it before the weekend or during any of the doubles matches or anything … I lost my focus a bit and felt a little bit emotional about that.”

However, Murray said he is willing to work hard and make sure he is ready if the opportunities come his way in the future.

“It’s obviously not going to be easy with the players that we have… Then obviously don’t know which way the captain will go with the doubles after the results here, as well,” Murray said.

“Don’t know what the future holds … But if I’m selected, yeah, I’ll definitely be involved,” he added.
